How to Select a Children’s Music Teacher

by admin on February 17, 2011 · 0 comments

We realize this isn’t a particularly techie subject, but it’s something we’ve been working on lately and thought we’d share.

Last month we embarked on a mission to find piano lessons Calgary Alberta where we’re located.  The online search brought up a number of potential instructors, but we wanted to know what to look out for when selecting a music teacher.

Here’s the shortlist of questions we had:

How long have you been teaching, and where else have you taught?

Great to get some background here and understand what levels of kids she’s taught in the past.

What bodies or organizations are you certified with?

Ask to see their certificates.

How would you describe your approach to teaching?

What approach does she have? Strict? More fun and entertainment-style?

What do you expect from your music students?

Try to grasp what it is that she expects from your child in terms of practice and commitment.

How do you accept payment?

How much are the lessons? How often and how would she like to be paid?

Can I talk to any of your former students?

Ask for a list of a few so YOU can pick who you talk to. Less of a chance to be coached in their answers.

If you take the time to thoroughly review and evaluate your options and you’ll be glad you did!
