Keeping Your Kids Safe Online

The Internet is an amazing resource with so many great things to offer.  However, there are dangers to be found online, as we are well-aware.  We want our kids to be able to make the most of the Internet and all it has to offer and enjoy it but we also want to make sure they are safe from these online dangers.  Here are a few common-sense tips for parents:

  • Get a basic knowledge of the Internet yourself, as a parent.  You do not have to become an expert, but get to know what your kids are doing online.
  • Parental Controls can be a great help, blocking inappropriate pop-ups and access to harmful sites.
  • Have the computer in a busy area of the home. This helps you keep an eye on what your kids are doing online and may also discourage them from visiting inappropriate sites.
  • Set boundaries.  Decide when and for how long your children may use the Internet.  Also let them know what sites they may visit and what is considered off-limits.  Make sure they understand the guidelines.
  • Monitor your childrens use of the Internet and let them know you will be doing so.  Do random checks on websites they have visited and e-mails they have received, if they are of an age where this is appropriate to do so.  You want to make sure to maintain their trust so be sure to discuss this with them.
  • Take time to discuss with your children what can happen on the internet.  An open line of communication is the best defense against the dangers found online.
